Over time shells break down, whether it is from the tumbling of the ocean, or the wear and tear of wandering hermit crabs. Shells native to the Florida Keys are no exception. Additionally shells native are to our area are limited to Tulip and Welk shells that would allow the success and longevity for our native Hermit Crabs to live to their fullest. Hermit crabs have been known to live up to 50 years old. Our hope is that by bringing awareness to our native vagabonds the preservation of their homes are considered by all who find an empty shell along our shorelines…
